Do a 15-minute sweep before donating your car. Remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration copy, glovebox papers, personal items, and valuables. Check under seats, visors, the center console, seat-back pockets, trunk, and spare-tire well. Factory-reset the infotainment system, including Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink, and any saved home address. Leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car.
Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security items first
Start with anything that could open your home, garage, office, or storage space. Pull the garage-door remote from the visor or console. Remove spare house keys, gate cards, building fobs, mailbox keys, and access badges. Check key rings, cup holders, door pockets, and the small tray near the shifter. These items are easy to miss and should not leave with the vehicle.
Pull billable items
Remove the toll transponder, parking pass, campus permit, garage sticker, ferry card, and any paid access device. Then remove the vehicle from the related toll or parking account. Do both steps. Taking the tag out of the car helps, but the account may still list that plate or vehicle until you update it. Keep receipts or screenshots if the account gives you confirmation.
Clear glovebox documents
Take out the insurance card, registration copy, repair receipts, loan papers, warranty papers, and any envelopes with your name, address, phone number, or policy numbers. Check the glovebox, owner manual pouch, sun-visor sleeve, door pockets, and center console. If you need proof for your own records, keep copies before the car is picked up. Do not leave personal paperwork behind.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Move front seats forward and back. Look under every seat, between cushions, in seat-back pockets, under floor mats, in cup holders, inside the console, and behind visors. Open the trunk or hatch. Check side compartments, cargo nets, tool trays, the spare-tire well, and any storage bin under the cargo floor. Remove sunglasses, chargers, cash, medications, garage clickers, toys, and personal bags.
Wipe saved vehicle data
Factory-reset the infotainment system if the car powers on. Delete Bluetooth pairings, call logs, contact lists, saved navigation points, and any saved home address. Clear garage-door settings such as HomeLink. Sign out of apps, satellite radio accounts, and connected services if available. If the screen will not turn on, remove phones from the vehicle account through your phone or account portal when possible.
Remove optional add-ons
You may remove personal aftermarket items if doing so does not damage the car or change what you described to Island Wheels. Common examples include dash cams, phone mounts, upgraded stereos, removable GPS units, child seats, roof-rack attachments, and custom floor mats. Leave the vehicle intact, safe to move, and as-described. Do not remove required parts such as factory seats, batteries, catalytic converters, or wheels.
Leave pickup items ready
Leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car. Put them where the pickup instructions tell you to place them, or hand them over if you are meeting the driver. Include all available keys, key fobs, and remotes that operate the vehicle. Title signing rules can vary by situation, so follow the title instructions and ask the Hawaii DMV if you are unsure.
Do not mix these tasks
Your clean-out sweep is separate from plate and ownership-notice tasks. For plates, see our License Plates After Donation guide. For the liability notice, see our Release of Liability After Donation guide. This page is only about what should and should not ride away inside the vehicle. A simple rule helps: remove anything personal, valuable, private, access-related, or billable. Leave only what Island Wheels needs to receive the donated vehicle: the keys, the signed-over title, and the car in the condition you described.
Common questions
Should I leave the registration in the glovebox?
No. Remove the registration copy and keep it with your records unless Island Wheels specifically tells you otherwise. It contains personal and vehicle information. The signed-over title is the ownership document that should stay with the car. If you are unsure about a title detail, ask the DMV before pickup.
What if I cannot factory-reset the screen?
Remove what you can manually. Delete paired phones if the system turns on. If it does not, use your phone, app, or online account to disconnect the vehicle where possible. Also clear garage-door programming if you can access it. Do not delay the clean-out over a screen that no longer powers up.
Can I remove my upgraded stereo or dash cam?
Usually, yes, if it is yours and removal does not damage the vehicle or change the donation description. Take dash cams, removable GPS units, phone mounts, child seats, and similar personal add-ons. Leave the vehicle complete enough to be moved safely and do not remove essential parts.
